On March 23, 2005, an explosion rocked the BP Texas City oil refinery, spewing flames and smoke into the air. 15 workers – moms and dads, sons and daughters – lost their lives. Hundreds more were injured, and countless families shattered.
In the aftermath of the explosion, heroes emerged. Family members, friends and survivors banded together to seek justice. They launched a campaign to challenge one of the world’s oil giants, taking on a company hell bent on profits at any cost.
Through countless legal battles, public appeals and aggressive grassroots action, the victims of the BP Texas City explosion exposed a pattern of reckless cost-cutting, insufficient government oversight and a blatant disregard for human life.
Along the way, there have been some victories – helping bring to light the depths of corporate irresponsibility at BP - but perhaps more importantly – revealing a broader industry-wide culture that puts profits over people. That’s why more must be done to prevent another Texas City from happening – and you can help.
On Friday, March 23rd, families will come together to mark the second anniversary of that terrible, and largely preventable, accident. We will gather on the steps of the State Capitol in Austin, Texas to announce a new legislative initiative – the Remember the 15 Bill – designed to change the way oil and chemical companies do business in Texas.
The earliest drafts of the Remember the 15 Bill were inspired and championed by Eva Rowe. Eva lost her mom and dad in the blast, turning a young, shy small-town woman into an activist and advocate for change. The bill, if enacted, would strengthen worker safety protections, toughen environmental regulations, and bolster government oversight.
Please join Eva, Texas City survivors and the families of those we lost to mark the second anniversary of the tragedy at Texas City, and to announce the Remember the 15 Bill. We will assemble on the South Steps of the Texas Capitol in Austin from 12:30 to 2:00 P.M.
This is a fight about saving families, protecting the environment and holding big corporations responsible for their actions. It is also a battle for justice – and we hope you will join with us.
